For updating the students pursuing PG/ Degree courses in Geoscience, Mining, Metallurgy, Materials Science and Mineral Engineering about the latest developments in respective disciplines, SGAT has been organising MINERAL DEVELOPMENT AWARENESS PROGRAMME (MDAP) on annual basis.
Activities that are covered under this programme include:
- Visit to Mines, Metallurgical Plants, Haulage system and Environment Protection measures
- Identification of specimen of rocks, ores, minerals, metallurgical products and photographs of mining machineries and metallurgical processes
- Interpretation of satellite imageries
- Oral Quiz

Mineral Development Awareness Programme (MDAP), 2025 with a theme “Responsible Mining, Stronger Nation” was organised in Joda Mining and Industrial Area during the 20th to 23rd of August, 2026 in collaboration with Department of Steel & Mines, Govt. of Odisha. The programme was sponsored by TATA Steel and was supported by Rungta Sons (P) Ltd., M/s S. N. Mohanty, MGM Minerals Ltd., M/s M. G. Mohanty, M/s KCP Iron (P) Ltd., Sarada Mines (P) Ltd., JSW Steel Ltd., Jindal Steel Ltd. Odisha Mining Corporation Ltd. and KCP Iron (P) Ltd. The programme included Presentations on Geology, Mining and Metallurgy by different experts in the field on the 20th of August 2026; visit to Joda West Managanes Mines, Joda East Iron Ore Mines, both of Tata Steel and Pellet Plant of JSL at Barbil and Identification of Rocks, Minerals, Ores, Mining Machineries, Metallurgical Processes and Interpretation of Satellite Imageries on the 21st of August 2026; visit to Ferro Alloys Plant, Joda; Sponge Iron Plant, Bileipada and Subject Specific Oral Quiz on the 22nd of August, 2026; and General Round Oral Quiz & Valedictory and Prize Distribution Ceremony on the 23rd of August, 2026.
The mines and plant visits were facilitated by the officers of Tata Steel. Other events of the programme were jointly conducted by T. Mohanta, R. N. Praharaj, J. N. Das, A. K. Raut, K. Patnaik, G. C. The Valedictory and Prize Distribution Ceremony was graced by Shri G. V. Satyanarayan, Chief Joda, Tata Steel, Shri P. K. Patra, Cluster Head and Executive Vice-President, Jindal Steel Ltd.; Shri Abhijit Sen, Joint President (Geology), M/s Rungta Sons (P) Ltd.; Shri Ananda Saraswat, Owner, Sarda Mines and Shri Bhaktabandhu Patra, Mining Officer, Joda as Guests of Honour. Shri Alok Bihari Panigrahi, President, SGAT presided the meeting. Shri Jadaba Nanda Das, General Secretary, SGAT initiated the meeting and gave an overview of the activities of SGAT and history of MDAP. Shri Satyanarayana, lauded the efforts of SGAT in sensitizing the young minds of the country in positive aspects of mining and its related industries. Shri Patra and Sen while echoing the similar sentiments appealed the students to apply their present field experiences in their future curriculum and careers. Shri Abhijit Sen gave a status of mining in the area and informed the huge contribution by the mining industries to DMF and NMET funds. He wished bright future to participants. Shri Panigrahi, President, SGAT highlighted the present mining scenario and the principle behind this year tagline “Responsible Mining, Stronger Nation” to the gathering. Shri Trilochan Mahanta, Vice-President, SGAT conducted the prize distribution function.
In the individual events of Identification of Rocks, Minerals, Ores, Mining Machineries, Metallurgical Processes and Interpretation of Satellite Imageries, Utkarsh Mishra of the School of Earth, Ocean & Climate Sciences (Geology Section), IIT, Bhubaneswar and Divya Umar of the Department of Applied Geology, IIT (ISM), Dhanbad jointly secured the Third position. Sushri Kabikanya of the Department of Mining Engineering, GCE, Keonjhar and Ankita Garnayak of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, NIT, Rourkela secured the Second and First positions respectively.
The Department of Mining Engineering, NIT, Raipur represented by Nilesh Panda and Nikhil Tiwari emerged as the Overall Third Team. The School of Earth, Ocean & Climate Sciences (Geology Section), IIT, Bhubaneswar represented by Swapnendu Bose and Utkarsh Mishra and the Department of Applied Geology, IIT (ISM), Dhanbad represented by Divya Umar and Ananya Dutta were adjudged as the Overall Second and First Teams of the event.
